The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has dismissed claims that a viral video showing children standing in the rain while waiting to be served food was recorded in Auchi or any part of the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, said findings from a prompt internal investigation revealed that the incident did not occur in Edo State.
According to the ministry, while unverified reports suggest the footage may have originated from another African country, there is no evidence linking it to Edo.
The ministry, however, condemned the conditions depicted in the video, describing them as a violation of child protection principles and relevant laws safeguarding the dignity and welfare of children.
It cautioned individuals and organisations against exposing children to neglect or inhumane treatment, stressing that the protection and well-being of children must remain a top priority.
The ministry also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic or damaging the reputation of communities and institutions.
Commending the state government’s efforts, the ministry praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for his commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly children, through targeted policies and interventions.
It also acknowledged the contributions of the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, for her advocacy and initiatives aimed at strengthening child protection and family welfare in the state.
Reaffirming its mandate, the ministry said it would continue to monitor and investigate cases involving child abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and take necessary action against offenders.
Residents were encouraged to report such cases through appropriate channels for prompt intervention.
