Gov Okpebholo Assures New IGP of Support, Seeks Stronger Security Collaboration in Edo

Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, of continued support and stronger collaboration in tackling insecurity in the state.

The governor gave the assurance on Friday when the new police boss paid a courtesy visit to Government House in Benin City alongside top police officers, including the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, and the AIG Nigeria Police Mobile Force.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Okpebholo congratulated the new IGP on his appointment as the 23rd indigenous Inspector General of Police in Nigeria, describing him as a professional officer whose rise in the force was earned through dedication and competence.

The governor recalled the role played by the IGP during the events surrounding the Edo governorship election, commending his professionalism and conduct.

According to him, the manner in which the police chief handled the situation at the time reflected discipline and professionalism.

Governor Okpebholo also pledged sustained cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force and called for stronger support from police authorities to maintain peace and security across Edo State.

He commended officers deployed to the state for their commitment to duty, noting that many of them work tirelessly day and night to keep residents safe.

Earlier, the IGP said his visit was aimed at meeting with officers and men of the Edo State Command and appreciating the governor for his support to the police.

He commended Governor Okpebholo for fulfilling promises made to support security operations in the state, while also appealing for continued assistance.

The police chief stressed that security requires collective responsibility, adding that modern policing depends on community participation and public trust.

According to him, commissioners of police across the country have been directed to make their phone numbers publicly available to strengthen communication with residents and promote trust.

The IGP added that the Nigeria Police Force is working towards intelligence-led policing and policing by consent.

Governor Okpebholo received the delegation alongside the Deputy Governor, RT Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Chief of Staff, Hon. Yakubu Musa, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, and retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe.
