Delta Police Bust Alleged Gunrunning Network, Arrest Four Suspects in Bayelsa and Imo

The Delta State Police Command has announced the arrest of four suspected gunrunners in separate operations conducted across Bayelsa and Imo states, marking a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and violent crime in Nigeria’s South-South and South East regions.

According to police authorities, the arrests followed intelligence led investigations targeting criminal networks allegedly involved in the illegal acquisition, transportation, and distribution of firearms. Security operatives reportedly recovered weapons and other items believed to be connected to the suspects’ activities during the operations.

Police officials stated that the crackdown forms part of an ongoing strategy to dismantle organized criminal syndicates that supply arms to violent groups, kidnappers, armed robbers, and other criminal elements operating across multiple states. The command emphasized that intelligence gathering and inter state collaboration remain critical tools in addressing the growing challenge of illicit weapons trafficking.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns in several parts of Nigeria, where authorities have intensified efforts to disrupt arms smuggling routes and prevent illegal firearms from reaching criminal groups. Security analysts have repeatedly warned that the circulation of unauthorized weapons continues to fuel insecurity, including kidnapping, communal violence, and armed attacks.

Authorities disclosed that investigations are ongoing to uncover additional members of the suspected network and trace the origins and intended destinations of the recovered weapons. The police also reiterated their commitment to strengthening public safety through proactive operations and urged residents to continue providing credible information that could assist security agencies in combating crime.

The latest arrests underscore the broader national campaign against illegal arms trafficking and reinforce the role of intelligence-driven policing in addressing evolving security threats across Nigeria.
