“Lagos Market Explosion: One Injured as Police Probe Suspected IED Blast in Mushin”

A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion at a bustling market in Lagos has left one person injured, prompting a major security response and an ongoing investigation by law enforcement authorities.

The incident occurred at the Shoe Materials Market in the Mushin area of Lagos, where an explosive device reportedly detonated beneath a vehicle, causing panic among traders, customers, and residents. Security agencies swiftly moved to the scene to secure the area and prevent further threats.

According to the Lagos State Police Command, preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was triggered by an IED concealed under the passenger side of a vehicle. Police Commissioner Fatai Tijani said the device detonated when the vehicle’s engine was started. The injured victim was immediately taken to a medical facility and is reported to be in stable condition.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts were deployed to the market and conducted a thorough sweep of the area. Authorities confirmed that no additional explosive devices were discovered during the operation, while fragments recovered from the blast site have been taken for forensic analysis as investigators work to determine the source and motive behind the incident.

The police have urged traders and residents to remain calm, assuring the public that the situation is under control and that normal commercial activities can continue. Security presence in and around the market has also been strengthened as a precautionary measure.

The explosion has renewed concerns about public safety in densely populated commercial centres across Nigeria’s economic capital. Analysts note that rapid intelligence gathering, community vigilance, and effective security coordination remain essential to preventing similar incidents and protecting lives and livelihoods.

While investigations continue, authorities have called on members of the public to report suspicious movements, unattended objects, or unusual activities to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to maintain safety and public order.
