“UNIUYO VC Raises Alarm Over University Funding Crisis, Calls on Alumni to Bridge Financial Gaps”
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has expressed concern over the widening funding gap confronting Nigerian universities, urging alumni associations and other stakeholders to play a more active role in supporting higher education institutions across the country.
Speaking during a recent engagement, the Vice Chancellor said inadequate funding continues to limit the capacity of public universities to provide quality teaching, research, infrastructure, and innovation. According to the university chief, government allocations alone are no longer sufficient to meet the growing financial demands of modern tertiary education.
The Vice Chancellor stressed that alumni networks remain a critical resource for institutional development, noting that graduates who have excelled in various sectors can contribute significantly through endowments, scholarships, infrastructure projects, research funding, and mentorship initiatives. Such interventions, the university leadership said, would help strengthen academic excellence while improving the learning environment for students.
The appeal comes amid persistent concerns over the financing of Nigeria’s higher education sector. Experts have repeatedly warned that insufficient investment in universities has contributed to deteriorating infrastructure, limited research capacity, and recurring industrial disputes. Education stakeholders have continued to advocate for stronger partnerships between government, the private sector, development organisations, and alumni bodies to ensure the long term sustainability of tertiary institutions.
Analysts say increased alumni participation has become a global best practice, with many leading universities relying on donations and endowment funds to complement public financing. They argue that expanding such support in Nigeria could enhance institutional competitiveness, improve educational quality, and reduce the pressure on government resources.
The UNIUYO Vice Chancellor reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to delivering quality education despite existing financial constraints and encouraged alumni to see their support as an investment in the future of the university and national development.
