From a 2007 Charity Photoshoot to a 2026 World Cup Final: The Remarkable Story Behind Messi and Lamine Yamal’s Viral Baby Photo.
A photograph showing a young Lionel Messi bathing a baby Lamine Yamal has resurfaced as one of football’s most extraordinary full circle stories, nearly two decades after the image was captured.
The photograph was taken in 2007, when Messi was a 19 year old Barcelona player and Yamal was only a few months old. The pair are now preparing to meet on football’s biggest stage, with Messi representing Argentina and Yamal playing for Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The image was not the result of a planned meeting between two future football icons. According to accounts from photographer Joan Monfort and reports by FIFA and other major media outlets, the photograph emerged from a charity initiative involving Barcelona, Diario Sport and UNICEF related fundraising activities.
Yamal’s mother, Sheila Ebana, had reportedly entered a raffle that gave families the opportunity to participate in a photoshoot with Barcelona players. After the family won, baby Yamal was brought to Camp Nou for the session.
By coincidence, the infant was paired with Messi, who was still at the early stage of his career but had already begun establishing himself as one of Barcelona’s most promising players. The photoshoot produced a series of images, including the now famous photograph of Messi holding and bathing the baby.
Photographer Joan Monfort later recalled that Messi appeared nervous because he had little experience handling babies. A plastic duck reportedly helped create a more relaxed atmosphere during the shoot, while the bathtub and towel were brought in for the session.
For years, the images remained largely unknown to the wider public. They gained renewed attention in 2024 after Yamal’s father shared one of the photographs online with the caption, “The beginning of two legends,” as the young Spanish winger began attracting global attention.
The photograph has now taken on an even greater significance. Yamal, who has emerged as one of the most highly rated young players in world football and has been widely compared with Messi because of his Barcelona connection and extraordinary technical ability, is set to face the Argentine superstar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The encounter represents an extraordinary reversal of roles. In the 2007 photograph, Messi is the established Barcelona star holding a baby who was unknown to the football world. Nearly 20 years later, the two are set to stand on opposite sides in a World Cup final, with Yamal representing a new generation of football talent and Messi continuing his remarkable career on the global stage.
The story has attracted renewed international attention because of its unusual coincidence, but the historical record is straightforward: the photograph was a genuine image from a charity photoshoot, not an artificially generated picture or a staged meeting created in anticipation of their future careers.
As Argentina and Spain prepare for the final, the viral photograph has become more than an internet curiosity. It now serves as a remarkable visual link between two eras of football the era defined by Messi and the emerging generation led by Yamal.
