“Aguiyi Ironsi Family to Mark 60 Years Since Nigeria’s First Military Head of State Was Assassinated”
The family of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi, is set to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his death in Umuahia, Abia State, as the nation reflects on one of the most consequential episodes in its political and military history.
Aguiyi Ironsi was killed on July 29, 1966, during a military counter coup in Ibadan, alongside the then Military Governor of the Western Region, Lieutenant Colonel Francis Adekunle Fajuyi. The event occurred barely six months after Aguiyi Ironsi assumed leadership of Nigeria following the January 1966 coup and significantly deepened the political and ethnic tensions that later contributed to the Nigerian Civil War.
As part of the 60th anniversary remembrance, the Aguiyi Ironsi family has also honoured Fajuyi, describing his decision to remain with the Head of State as a sacrifice that symbolized loyalty, courage and commitment to Nigeria’s unity. The family said the anniversary provides an opportunity to remember both military leaders and reflect on the enduring lessons of Nigeria’s turbulent history.
The memorial event in Umuahia is expected to bring together family members, dignitaries and others interested in preserving the historical legacy of Major General Aguiyi Ironsi and the events that shaped Nigeria in the 1960s.
