“Three Students Rescued as Student Hostel Collapses Near Federal Polytechnic Oko in Anambra”
Three students have been rescued after a three storey hostel collapsed in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with emergency responders continuing search operations for other occupants feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly collapsed late Sunday night, July 26, in the Amokpala area near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. The privately operated hostel was reportedly occupied mainly by students of the institution.
According to reports, police officers, firefighters, officials of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency and volunteers mobilized to the scene after the collapse. Rescue teams have been working through the debris as they search for possible survivors.
Three rescued students were taken to St. Michael Hospital in Oko for medical attention, while the exact number of people still trapped or the total number of casualties had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
The Anambra State Police Command said the scene had been secured and that joint rescue efforts were ongoing. Authorities have also urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information and to stay clear of the area to allow emergency personnel to operate effectively.
The cause of the building collapse remains unclear, and investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The development has renewed concerns about the safety and structural integrity of privately operated accommodation facilities in communities serving Nigeria’s growing student population.
