  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Nqobile Khumalo Isn’t Waiting For Her Moment — She’s Creating It

For Khumalo, the title isn’t just about ratings or screen time. It’s about what television can do when it tells the truth about South African lives.

Khumalo didn’t arrive on set by accident. Her first years in TV were behind the camera. She worked production, watched how scripts turned into scenes, and learned how a small choice in lighting or pacing could change how a story lands.

That background matters. When she eventually moved in front of the camera, she brought an understanding most new actors don’t have. She knew what the crew needed, what the director was chasing, and why a 20-second reaction shot could carry a whole episode.

People who work with her use the same words: early, prepared, present. She asks questions. She listens more than she talks. She treats small roles with the same care as lead roles. That consistency is what turned guest appearances into recurring parts, and recurring parts into characters that families now invite into their homes every week.Headline: Nqobile Khumalo Isn’t Waiting For Her Moment — She’s Creating It

The _S Mag_ Woman of the Year award recognizes exactly that. Not just fame, but influence. The kind that shifts how stories are told and who gets to tell them.

*Using The Platform With Purpose*
What makes Khumalo different is how she talks when the cameras are off.

In the _S Mag_ profile, she was direct about the parts of the industry no one posts about. The rejections. The pressure to look a certain way. The need to protect your peace in a job that never really switches off.

“I’m still learning,” she said. “Every year I want to be better than the last version of me. Not just as an actress. As a human.”

She’s also honest about representation. She wants to see more women, especially Black women, in rooms where decisions get made. Not as tokens, but as writers, producers, and directors with real power. She talks about saying no to roles that flatten women into stereotypes, even when the money was good.

That honesty has made her a reference point for younger actors. Many of them didn’t grow up with industry connections. They see Khumalo and see a path that didn’t require knowing the right surname — just work, discipline, and the willingness to keep showing up.

The past year has been busy. Khumalo has taken on more layered characters, stepped into producing, and started pushing for the kinds of stories South African TV doesn’t make enough of.

She’s drawn to working-class households, to small towns, to women caught between tradition and ambition. She wants television that feels familiar but doesn’t flatter us. Stories that hold a mirror up and also open a window.

Off screen, she’s building infrastructure. She’s spoken openly about moving into directing and producing because she’s tired of waiting for someone else to greenlight the ideas she believes in. She’s also been involved in workshops for young creatives in Soweto and nearby communities — teaching basics of auditioning, self-taping, and how to navigate contracts.

It’s not charity work for optics. People close to her say it comes from remembering what it felt like to not have anyone explain the basics.

She isn’t chasing virality. She’s chasing work that lasts.

*Why This Award Matters Now*
_S Mag_ has been doing its Woman of the Year issue for five years, spotlighting women leading in business, activism, sport, and the arts. Putting a TV actor on the cover in 2026 is intentional.

Television is still the place where most South Africans meet new ideas. It’s where language shifts, where fashion trends start, where kids decide what’s possible for them. When Khumalo leads a show, she’s not just entertaining. She’s modeling.

And audiences are responding. The feedback producers hear isn’t just “she’s good.” It’s “she feels like us.” That’s rare, and it’s why the industry keeps calling her back.

*The Road Ahead*
Ask Khumalo what’s next and you won’t get a press-release answer. You’ll get something about a script she’s annotating, a meeting about a pilot she’s co-producing, or a mentee who just booked her first role.

She doesn’t talk about “peaking.” She talks about building.

“There’s so much more to do,” she said in the interview. “I want to make stories that people remember in 10 years. Not because they trended for a weekend, but because they said something true.”

That’s the through-line of her career so far. Show up. Do the work. Tell the truth. Bring other people with you.

As 2026 continues, expect to see her face more, but also expect to see her name in credits you wouldn’t have expected. Behind the camera. In writers’ rooms. In funding meetings for new talent.

The Woman of the Year title is a milestone. Khumalo treats it that way — as proof that the work is landing, not as a reason to stop.

Nqobile Khumalo isn’t slowing down. She’s aiming higher. And she’s making sure the door stays open behind her.
