MFM Make History as First Champions of Inaugural Louis Edem Women’s West Africa Basketball Championship.
LAGOS, Nigeria Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) Women’s Basketball Team have reportedly made history by emerging champions of the inaugural Louis Edem Women’s West Africa Basketball Championship, defeating fellow Nigerian side First Bank in the final.
The landmark victory places MFM at the centre of a new chapter in West African women’s basketball, as the competition seeks to provide a stronger platform for female athletes across the sub region. The championship was organized by the Louis Edem Foundation and held at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The 2026 championship was announced earlier in the year as an international women’s basketball tournament bringing together teams from Nigeria and other West African countries, including Ghana, Benin Republic and Togo. Organisers said the event was designed not only to promote competitive basketball but also to advance youth development, women’s empowerment and talent discovery.
MFM’s reported triumph over First Bank is particularly notable given the long standing competitiveness between the two Nigerian women’s basketball teams. First Bank and MFM have previously met in major domestic and invitational competitions, including the Crown Elite Women Basketball Championship, where the two sides contested the final in 2022.
The Louis Edem Basketball Championship has developed into an increasingly prominent platform for basketball talent in the region. Previous editions featured clubs from Nigeria, Ghana and Benin Republic, with the organisers positioning the tournament as an opportunity for players to gain high level competitive experience and attract attention from coaches, agents and scouts.
Beyond the result on the court, the growth of the women’s edition reflects broader efforts to strengthen opportunities for female basketball players in West Africa. The Louis Edem Foundation has also linked its basketball programmes with education, mentorship and leadership development, including scholarships and training initiatives for young female athletes.
MFM’s reported championship victory therefore carries significance beyond the trophy itself, highlighting the growing competitiveness of women’s basketball in Nigeria and the potential of regional competitions to create more pathways for African female athletes.
