“ECOWAS Opens $65,000 Startup Awards 2026: How Nigerian Entrepreneurs Can Apply Before August 31″

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened applications for the second edition of its West African Startups Awards, creating a new opportunity for innovative businesses across the region, including Nigeria, to compete for a combined $65,000 in cash prizes.

The 2026 competition is designed to identify, recognize and support promising startups while strengthening digital entrepreneurship, innovation and economic integration across West Africa. According to details published by PUNCH on Tuesday, August 11, applications opened on August 3 and will close on August 31, 2026.

The programme will select 60 startups from 12 ECOWAS member states across six key sectors: EdTech and skills development, FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and food systems, CleanTech and climate or green innovation, as well as tourism, hospitality and TravelTech.

How Much Can Winners Receive?

The competition has a combined prize pool of $65,000. The reported awards are $30,000 for the winner, $20,000 for the first runner up and $15,000 for the second runner up. Beyond the cash prizes, successful startups could gain access to regional exposure, investor deal rooms, networking opportunities and a six-month acceleration and mentorship programme. Winners may also receive digital tools, including computers, accessories and software.

The initiative builds on the inaugural West African Startups Awards held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021, where 55 contestants from 11 ECOWAS member states participated. ECOWAS had previously announced plans to institutionalize the awards as an annual platform for promoting innovation and digital entrepreneurship in the region.

Who Can Apply?

Nigerian entrepreneurs interested in the competition must meet the stated eligibility requirements. Applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state, operate a startup registered and based in an ECOWAS country, and have been in operation for at least two years.

Applicants must also demonstrate that they have a working product or service, provide evidence of market traction or scalability, and submit the required supporting documents.

How Nigerians Can Apply

Interested Nigerian startup founders can apply through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards application portal. Applicants are required to create an account with their personal details before accessing and completing the application form.

The application requires several supporting documents, including an identity document for the lead founder, a recent passport photograph, a business registration certificate where applicable, two years of financial statements, management accounts or projections, a business plan of no more than 10 pages, a pitch deck of up to 10 slides and a one minute pitch video.

Applications can reportedly be saved as drafts before final submission, giving applicants an opportunity to review their information and supporting materials before completing the process.

The selection process will combine national-level selection with open applications. Finalists will proceed to the regional stage in Abuja, where they will pitch their businesses before a jury comprising industry experts, investors and policy stakeholders. Evaluation will consider factors including the clarity of the problem being addressed, innovation, team capacity, market potential, financial viability, social and economic impact, and alignment with ECOWAS priorities.

Selected startups are scheduled to take part in virtual masterclasses from September 21 to 25, 2026, followed by a physical programme in Abuja from September 28 to 30, with the regional finals scheduled for September 30.

For Nigerian founders, the competition represents more than an opportunity to win funding. Regional visibility, investor access, mentorship and exposure to policymakers and other entrepreneurs could provide additional pathways for startups seeking to scale beyond Nigeria into the wider West African market.

With the August 31 deadline approaching, eligible Nigerian startups are advised to verify their documentation, prepare a concise business case and submit their applications through the official platform before the closing date.
