A Nigerian man who had been out of contact with his family for nearly a decade has been reunited with his loved ones after a stranger spotted him wandering the streets of Dallas, Texas.
Phillip Elobuike, from Enugu State, was found earlier this month by a Nigerian woman who saw him moving between bus stops to find shade during the city’s intense heat.
The woman, who shared her encounter on the social media page of Beyond the Scars Foundation, said she approached him out of concern and asked about his background.
In the video, Elobuike told her his name and said he was from Enugu State. He also mentioned his mother, Evelyn Elobuike, and his sister, Josephine Elobuike.Wandering in Dallas Reunites With Family in Enugu
ā€œHe was jumping from one bus to another just to get shade. It’s very hot outside,ā€ the woman said in the clip. ā€œI saw Phillip roaming around on the street.ā€
Worried about his situation and not knowing where else to turn, she recorded the video and made a public appeal. She asked Nigerians at home and abroad to share the footage in hopes of finding his relatives.
ā€œI’m appealing to anyone who knows him or is looking for him to come forward,ā€ she said.
The post quickly spread across WhatsApp, Facebook, and X. Nigerians shared it with captions urging people to help ā€œbring Phillip home.ā€
In a follow-up update, the woman thanked everyone who shared the video and said Elobuike’s family had been located in Enugu. She did not share further details about how the contact was made, but confirmed the family had been reached and communication was established.
News of the reunion sparked an outpouring of relief online. Many commenters praised the woman for stopping to help instead of walking past.
ā€œThis is what community looks like,ā€ one person wrote. ā€œThank you for not ignoring him.
It’s not clear how long Elobuike had been in the United States, or what led to the decade-long gap in communication with his family.
What is clear is the impact of the reunion. For a family that had not heard from their son and brother in 10 years, seeing his face and hearing his name again brought closure to years of uncertainty.
Cases like this are not uncommon. Advocacy groups say many migrants and immigrants experience periods of disconnection due to lost documents, lack of stable housing, mental health challenges, or simply losing touch while trying to build a new life abroad.
Organizations like Beyond the Scars Foundation often share videos and appeals to help locate missing people, particularly within diaspora communities where word-of-mouth and social media can reach people faster than official channels.
In the Dallas heat, a simple act — stopping to ask someone’s name — led to a family being put back together.
The woman who found Elobuike said she didn’t know if the video would work. She just knew she had to try
That decision, and the thousands of shares that followed, closed a 10-year gap for the Elobuike family in Enugu.
For now, Phillip is back in contact with his mother Evelyn and sister Josephine. And for Nigerians online who watched the story unfold, it’s a reminder that sometimes finding someone starts with one person choosing to ask, ā€œAre you okay
