“North Korea Fires 10 Ballistic Missiles as Trump Signals Fresh Kim Jong Un Summit”

North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles into waters off its eastern coast on Thursday, August 20, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said he planned to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the launches from the Pyongyang area, with the missiles reportedly travelling about 300 kilometres toward the East Sea. Japan also confirmed the launch, saying at least one projectile appeared to be a ballistic missile and landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The missile launches came amid heightened security activity on the Korean Peninsula and shortly after Washington announced changes to its annual military exercises with South Korea. Trump had ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce the scale of the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, describing the exercises as inappropriate and hostile toward Pyongyang.

Trump said on Wednesday that he expected to meet Kim later this year, reviving speculation about a new phase of direct diplomacy between Washington and Pyongyang. The two leaders previously held three meetings between 2018 and 2019, but negotiations over North Korea’s nuclear programme broke down without a lasting agreement.

However, Pyongyang has shown little enthusiasm for an immediate return to negotiations. Kim Jong Un’s sister and senior official, Kim Yo Jong, dismissed Washington’s reduction of military exercises as insufficient, while indicating that North Korea continued to regard the United States as hostile. At the same time, she acknowledged that the personal relationship between Trump and Kim remained positive.

The latest launches therefore underline the complexity facing any potential Trump-Kim meeting. While Washington appears interested in reopening direct engagement, North Korea continues to expand and demonstrate its military capabilities, potentially strengthening its position ahead of any future negotiations.

South Korea has condemned North Korea’s repeated missile activity while maintaining that diplomacy remains important to reducing tensions. The latest developments also come as China pushes for renewed dialogue and greater stability on the Korean Peninsula.

For the wider region, the missile tests are likely to reinforce concerns in Seoul and Tokyo about North Korea’s growing missile and nuclear capabilities. They also present an early test for Trump’s stated desire to rebuild personal diplomacy with Kim Jong Un: whether dialogue can progress while Pyongyang continues to develop its weapons programme remains a central question.
