  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

For statement wey Minority Leader Fredrick Agbedi and the caucus spokesperson, Afam Victor Ogene sign, the lawmakers talk say the security situation wey dey worsen don become too much, as dem mention recent attacks for Plateau, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina and other states.

The caucus talk say communities dey suffer deaths, displacement and abductions, while criminal groups dey threaten residents, farmers, worshippers and other vulnerable Nigerians more and more. Dem argue say government response suppose pass just to dey give condolences after attacks, make e focus on sustained, intelligence-led security operations.

Among wetin dem recommend, the caucus suggest make dem withdraw $5 billion from Nigeria’s external reserves to finance wetin dem call extraordinary security intervention. The lawmakers talk say to protect citizens and their livelihoods suppose be the main responsibility of government.

The lawmakers also call for stronger military and intelligence operations for areas wey dey affected by terrorism and banditry. Dem urge security agencies make dem take over affected areas and target forests, hideouts, supply routes and other places wey criminal groups dey use.

Importantly, the caucus clarify say their call for security “lockdown” no be to restrict innocent citizens. Rather, dem talk say the aim suppose be to restrict the operational environment of terrorists and bandits, disrupt their communications and supply networks, and keep pressure until dem rescue abducted Nigerians and dismantle criminal networks.

The lawmakers further urge President Tinubu make e expand successful intelligence-led rescue operations, as dem point to the reported rescue of schoolchildren and teachers wey dem abduct for Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as approach wey fit work for other parts of the country.

The renewed call come as insecurity dey persist for northern states. The Independent report say the caucus mention recent attacks for Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Kaduna and Katsina, while dem also raise concern about children and teachers wey still dey missing after abductions.

Beyond military operations, the lawmakers call for better welfare and pay for military personnel, as dem argue say security forces need adequate support to fit confront the country’s changing security threats well.

The caucus also urge the National Assembly make dem dey ready to come back together when e necessary to address urgent security matters and make sure say measures wey dem approve to strengthen the armed forces dey implemented without bureaucratic delays.

The Minority Caucus latest intervention show say dem dey seriously concerned about insecurity wey dey affect Nigeria’s opposition lawmakers. For June 2026, the caucus don criticize the Federal Government over worsening insecurity, abductions and killings, while dem dey call for complete overhaul of Nigeria’s security system.

For Obaland magazine, the main issue still be the protection of civilian lives and the restoration of normal social and economic activities for communities wey dey affected by violence. Beyond political disagreements, the level of insecurity need effective coordination among federal security agencies, state governments, local authorities and communities.

The Minority Caucus don now put pressure on Tinubu administration to show say dem dey make measurable progress in protecting Nigerians, rescuing abducted citizens and dismantling the criminal networks wey dey cause repeated attacks.

As insecurity dey affect livelihoods, education, farming, transportation and community life for parts of Northern Nigeria, the lawmakers dey insist say Nigerians need concrete security results instead of repeated statements of condemnation.
