  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Lagos, Nigeria — Uber, di popular ride-hailing company, don stop im operations for Nigeria from September 2, 2026, after about 12 years wey di company dey provide transport service for di country.

Di company first enter Nigeria for 2014, starting operations for Lagos before e later spread go other cities. But after more than one decade for di Nigerian market, Uber don decide to wind down im operations for di country.

Uber talk say di decision come after e review im business operations and as part of changing business priorities and where di company wan put im investment across Africa. Di company no give one specific reason wey make am leave Nigeria.

Di development don raise questions about wetin go happen to di drivers wey depend on Uber to make daily income, passengers wey dey use di platform for movement and di wider ride-hailing industry for Nigeria.

Di people behind di Uber app

Behind every Uber trip, drivers and riders dey.

For plenty drivers, ride-hailing no be just another application for phone. Na source of livelihood wey help dem take feed family, pay rent, maintain motor and handle oda daily expenses.

Some Uber drivers don already complain for different times about fuel cost, commission, fares and difficult operating conditions.

According to reports, drivers protested against issues around fares, commissions and treatment by ride-hailing platforms in Nigeria for 2017, 2023 and 2025.

Now wey Uber don leave, drivers wey dey depend heavily on di platform need to look for oda ways to continue business.

Di company say e don dey communicate with active drivers and e don provide token of appreciation as dem dey move enter di next stage.

Riders too go feel di difference

For passengers, Uber don become part of everyday movement for major Nigerian cities.

Students, workers, business people, tourists and families don dey use ride-hailing applications because dem fit request motor through phone without standing by roadside to find taxi.

With Uber no longer available, riders go need depend more on oda platforms and traditional transport options.

Di change fit also affect prices and waiting time depending on how quickly other ride-hailing companies fit absorb passengers wey previously dey use Uber.

Competition don open another opportunity

Uber departure no mean say Nigeria ride-hailing market don collapse.

Instead, competitors such as Bolt and inDrive dey look to take advantage of di space wey Uber don leave behind.

TheCable report say both companies dey strengthen their position for Nigeria as Uber exits. inDrive also describe Nigeria as an important African market and say im active user base don dey grow year after year.

Dis fit create new opportunities for drivers and passengers, but competition alone no guarantee say drivers go immediately get better earnings or passengers go always get cheaper rides.

Di industry still dey face challenges including fuel prices, inflation, vehicle maintenance costs and naira instability.

Why Uber decision dey important

Nigeria na one of Africa biggest economies and one of di continent’s most populous countries.

For any international technology company wey dey operate for Nigeria, di market get huge potential. But large population no automatically mean say business operations go profitable.

Reuters report say Nigeria ride-hailing market don face growing pressure from higher fuel costs, inflation and currency volatility, all of which don increase operating expenses for both drivers and companies.

Uber’s decision therefore fit show di kind pressure wey global technology companies dey face as dem try balance growth, operating costs and investment priorities across African markets.

Uber exit no be di end of ride-hailing for Nigeria

Even though Uber don leave, ride-hailing itself no disappear.

Bolt, inDrive and oda operators still dey compete for Nigerian passengers and drivers.

For government, di development fit also serve as reminder of di need for policies wey go make digital transport businesses sustainable while protecting both drivers and passengers.

Issues around driver welfare, passenger safety, fair pricing, taxation, regulation and vehicle operating costs remain important as Nigeria’s transport sector continues to change.

Uber still dey Africa

Uber’s Nigerian exit no mean say di company don abandon Africa completely.

The company say di decision only affect Nigeria and Uganda and e remain committed to Sub-Saharan Africa, where e see continued growth and long-term opportunities.

Di company also say rider support go remain available for 21 days after operations stop to help customers with outstanding questions and transition matters. Reuters separately report say Uber’s help centre go remain available until September 23.

At di same time, Uber dey undergo wider restructuring globally. Reuters report say di company plans to cut about 3,300 jobs, representing roughly 10 per cent of im workforce, as management tries to simplify operations and respond to changes inside di transport technology industry.

Wetin Nigeria fit learn from di development

Uber’s departure fit be more than just one company closing shop.

E fit become opportunity for Nigerian technology and transport companies to build stronger local alternatives wey understand di realities of Nigerian roads, drivers and passengers.

But for di people wey dey directly affected, especially drivers, di transition fit no easy.

As competitors dey move to capture Uber’s former customers, di real test go be whether drivers fit find sustainable income and whether passengers fit continue to get safe, reliable and affordable transportation.

For Obaland Magazine, di story no suppose end with “Uber don comot.”

Di bigger question na: who go fill di gap, how dem go do am, and wetin di people wey depend on ride-hailing go gain or lose as Nigeria’s transport market enter another phase?
