Nigerian Female Builders Renew Push to Expand Women’s Visibility and Opportunities in Construction.

The Association of Professional Women Builders of Nigeria (APWBN) has renewed its commitment to empowering more women and increasing their visibility and access to opportunities within Nigeria’s building and construction industry.

The association’s agenda reflects longstanding concerns over the underrepresentation of women in a sector traditionally dominated by men. APWBN has previously identified mentorship, professional development, career advocacy and skills training as important pathways for encouraging more women and girls to pursue careers in building technology and related professions.

The association’s activities have also included efforts to encourage young women to consider building as a professional career. Earlier initiatives included career talks targeting students and programmes designed to support women and female artisans with practical construction skills.

The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) recognizes the Association of Professional Women Builders of Nigeria as an ex officio constituency within its national council structure, reflecting the association’s institutional connection to the wider professional building community.

Tackling Barriers Facing Women

The push for greater participation comes amid continuing challenges confronting women in Nigeria’s construction sector. A 2026 study published in the Journal of the Association of Professional Women Builders of Nigeria examined female professionals in Bauchi State and identified barriers including restricted access to leadership opportunities, workplace practices, limited career advancement and wider socio cultural constraints.

The study argues that addressing structural, organisational and socio cultural barriers is necessary to improve women’s participation and career progression in the built environment.

APWBN’s recent professional activities also demonstrate an emphasis on knowledge development. In March 2026, the association’s journal published research covering construction management, technology and gender related issues, providing an additional platform for research and professional discussion within the sector.

Building Skills, Networks and Visibility

The association has previously promoted mentorship and career guidance as part of efforts to attract younger women into the profession. In 2021, The Punch reported that APWBN planned career talks for girls, particularly through public schools and local communities, while also seeking sponsorship opportunities for financially disadvantaged girls interested in studying building technology.

The organisation has also participated in programmes aimed at equipping female artisans with construction related skills. The Guardian Nigeria reported that government backed training programmes had been implemented in collaboration with APWBN to provide women with skills in areas including masonry, tiling, plumbing, electrical work and other trades.

Technology has likewise emerged as part of the conversation around women’s participation in construction. Reporting on an APWBN investiture previously noted calls for female professionals to embrace digital technologies, with industry stakeholders arguing that digitalization could improve productivity while creating additional avenues for professional learning and networking.

The association’s continuing focus on visibility, training and professional development comes as Nigeria’s construction sector faces the broader challenge of developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting the country’s infrastructure and housing needs.

For APWBN, expanding opportunities for women is therefore not limited to increasing numbers. It also involves creating stronger professional networks, improving access to skills and leadership opportunities, and ensuring that qualified women have greater visibility within the built environment.
