Imo NYSC Abduction: Police Locate Kidnappers’ Camp as IED Threat Delays Rescue Operation.

The Imo State Police Command has located the suspected hideout where prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) abducted along the Owerri Onitsha Road are believed to be held, but security forces have delayed entering the location over intelligence that the camp has been planted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The development was disclosed by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, who said security operatives tracked the suspected kidnappers into the bush before using drone surveillance to establish the location of their camp.

Bosso explained that although the drones successfully identified the suspected hideout, security personnel could not immediately advance because of intelligence indicating that the area had been mined with explosives. The police are therefore preparing a more carefully coordinated operation aimed at reaching the victims without exposing them or the rescue team to unnecessary danger.

According to the commissioner, bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers (APCs) are being deployed to support the operation as security agencies work to gain access to the location.

The abduction occurred on October 1, 2026, when gunmen attacked two buses conveying prospective corps members travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, towards NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. The attack took place along the Owerri Onitsha Road around Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

The number of people still in captivity has remained unclear, with different reports giving varying figures. Premium Times reported that 10 victims were rescued following the initial intervention by security agencies, while the transport company involved said 19 prospective corps members were abducted. News however, reported that 20 victims were involved in the abduction. Security authorities have yet to provide a definitive public breakdown reconciling the figures.

The police have intensified the operation following the deployment of additional personnel and operational assets. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reportedly assigned Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Umar Nadada, to coordinate the rescue effort in Imo State.

Nadada has assured families of the abducted prospective corps members that security agencies are working to secure their safe release, while urging relatives to cooperate with investigators and avoid actions that could compromise the operation.

The incident has also heightened concerns among families, particularly after reports that the abductors had made ransom demands. Channels Television reported that some relatives received demands of ₦50 million per victim, although the circumstances surrounding the reported demands remain part of the ongoing investigation.

No group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack, and the police have said investigations are ongoing. Authorities have also refrained from publicly identifying the suspected perpetrators while the rescue and investigation efforts continue.

The discovery of the suspected camp represents a significant development in the operation, but the reported presence of IEDs has introduced an additional security challenge. For the families awaiting the return of their loved ones, the priority remains a safe and successful rescue rather than a rushed operation that could endanger the hostages.

The incident also underscores persistent security concerns along major inter-state highways in Nigeria and the risks faced by young Nigerians travelling to fulfil national service obligations. A successful resolution will depend on coordinated intelligence, careful tactical planning and sustained cooperation between the police and other security agencies.

Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine. Super Eagles Face Russia With 19 Players After Seven Withdrawals Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face Russia in an international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday with 19 players available after seven players withdrew from the squad because of injuries, club restrictions and documentation problems. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that captain Wilfred Ndidi and Basel defender Victor Akpe were ruled out through injury. Ndidi sustained a knock during Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying defeat to Guinea-Bissau, while Akpe was unable to travel because of an injury. Raphael Onyedika, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ridwan Abdulrasaq Popoola were also unavailable after their respective clubs declined to release them for the fixture. Austria-based forward Moses Usor, who scored on his Super Eagles debut against Madagascar, was similarly prevented by LASK from travelling after he was subsequently requested by head coach Éric Chelle. Suleiman Mubarak of Slavia Prague was the seventh withdrawal. His absence was attributed to an unresolved residence-permit issue that prevented him from travelling to Russia. The departures significantly altered Chelle’s original plans, but the squad was strengthened by the late arrival of Ibrahim Ajasa from Russian club FC Rostov. His inclusion brought the number of players in camp to 19 ahead of the encounter. The 19 players currently in camp are Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Stanley Nwabali, Kelechi Iheanacho, Emmanuel Fernandez, Benjamin Frederick, Wilfred Igor, Samuel James, Kenneth Igboke, Chibuzor Nwoko, Umar Abubakar, Peter Edokpolor, Abdullahi Bewene, Umar Abdullai, Atata Michael, Aderemi Adeoye, Isaac James, Michael Stephen and Ibrahim Ajasa. The friendly gives Chelle an opportunity to assess several less-established players while also preparing Nigeria for its forthcoming international commitments. The Super Eagles enter the match after a 2–1 victory over Madagascar followed by a 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their latest AFCON qualifying fixture. Russia, meanwhile, arrive with confidence after victories over Iran and Namibia, including a 6–0 win against Namibia. Nigeria and Russia previously met in Moscow in June 2025, when the sides played out a 1–1 draw. For Nigeria, the encounter will therefore serve both as a competitive international test and an opportunity for Chelle to examine the depth of his squad amid a series of late changes.
