  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Tennessee Prison Chief Frank Strada Resigns After Failed Christa Pike Execution as Tennessee Halts Death Penalty Attempts.

Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada has announced his resignation following the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike, placing renewed scrutiny on the state’s lethal injection procedures and its administration of capital punishment.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced that Strada will step down later in October 2026, days after Pike survived an attempted lethal injection at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Lee has also ordered an independent review of the incident and suspended further executions in Tennessee for the remainder of the year.

Strada, who has led the Tennessee Department of Correction since 2023, said he believes the department carried out its responsibilities according to established procedures. However, he said stepping aside was in the best interest of Tennesseans while the independent review determines what went wrong during the execution attempt. Governor Lee accepted the resignation and said an interim commissioner would be appointed.

The execution attempt involving Pike took place on September 30, 2026, after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the state to proceed. According to Pike’s attorneys, officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, but the drugs apparently did not enter her bloodstream properly after difficulties with intravenous access.

Pike, 50, was subsequently hospitalized, unconscious and dependent on a ventilator. Her lawyers said she suffered serious injuries to both arms, including swelling, burns and blisters, while medical staff worked to treat the effects of the drug. The precise circumstances surrounding the failed procedure remain subject to investigation.

Pike’s legal team has alleged that corrections officials had been warned about difficulties associated with her small veins and a blood disorder known as thrombocytosis. The Tennessee Department of Correction, however, has maintained that its personnel followed the state’s lawful execution protocol.

The episode has intensified scrutiny of Tennessee’s broader record on executions. Pike’s case was reportedly the second failed execution attempt in the state this year. In May, the execution of Tony Carruthers was halted after officials were unable to establish a secondary intravenous line.

Strada’s previous record in corrections has also come under renewed attention. Before becoming Tennessee’s corrections commissioner, he served as a senior corrections official in Arizona, where executions conducted during his tenure were also marked by significant complications. Reports by the Guardian and other outlets have highlighted the history as part of the growing debate over his leadership of Tennessee’s execution system.

Governor Lee has appointed former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton to lead the independent review. Stanton previously examined Tennessee’s lethal injection procedures in 2022, following an earlier execution-related controversy, and his work contributed to revisions of the state’s execution protocol. The new review is expected to examine whether officials complied with established procedures and whether additional safeguards are required.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19 year old Colleen Slemmer, who was her fellow student at a Job Corps centre in Knoxville. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing and subsequently became one of the youngest women sentenced to death in the United States.

Pike’s attorneys have called for greater transparency surrounding Tennessee’s execution procedures and have asked authorities to preserve evidence connected to the failed attempt. They have also sought a commutation of Pike’s death sentence to life imprisonment.

As the independent investigation proceeds, Strada’s departure is likely to remain part of a broader examination of Tennessee’s death penalty system, particularly its execution protocols, medical safeguards, transparency and institutional accountability.
