US Dollar Nears 18 Month High as Fed Inflation Warnings, Rising Oil Prices Lift Rate Hike Bets.

The US dollar has strengthened to near an 18 month high as investors reassess the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook following renewed concerns over persistent inflation and rising energy costs.

The dollar index rose to 102.32 on Thursday, October 8, close to its strongest level since April 2025, according to News report. The move came after newly released minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting indicated that policymakers remain concerned about inflation and that most officials see the possibility of another interest rate increase before the end of the year.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate target by 25 basis points in September to a range of 3.75% to 4%. Its latest minutes showed that officials considered inflation to remain elevated and viewed risks to the inflation outlook as tilted to the upside. The central bank has maintained that returning inflation to its 2% target remains a key priority.

The prospect of tighter US monetary policy has strengthened the dollar by making dollar denominated assets more attractive to investors seeking higher returns. News reported that markets are currently leaning towards a pause at the Federal Reserve’s October meeting but continue to price in the possibility of another rate increase in December.

Energy prices add to inflation concerns

Rising energy prices have added another layer of uncertainty to the global economic outlook. The Federal Reserve’s September minutes identified higher energy and input costs linked to geopolitical developments as contributors to persistent inflation.

The minutes showed that US consumer inflation, measured by the personal consumption expenditures price index, was estimated at 3.8% in August, while core PCE inflation was estimated at 3.4%. The Fed also cited higher technology-related costs associated with the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure as another factor affecting prices.

Oil prices have also climbed amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Associated Press reported on Thursday that Brent crude rose nearly 4% to about $104.18 a barrel, while US crude gained to roughly $91.70. The rise in energy costs has renewed concerns that inflation could remain elevated for longer than previously anticipated.

Global markets feel the pressure

The dollar’s advance has coincided with a broader rise in global bond yields and pressure on several major currencies. Reuters reported that the euro fell close to a 17 month low against the dollar, while concerns over French public finances have contributed to pressure on European bond markets.

Higher US yields and expectations of tighter monetary policy can attract international capital towards dollar assets, supporting the currency. At the same time, elevated borrowing costs can place pressure on governments, companies and emerging-market economies that rely heavily on dollar denominated financing.

For African economies, sustained dollar strength could have wider implications through exchange rates, external debt servicing, commodity prices and the cost of imports. Countries with significant dollar obligations may face increased local currency costs when the US currency appreciates.

The situation also highlights the difficult policy balance confronting the Federal Reserve. While inflation remains above its 2% target, recent US employment data have shown signs of weakening. Reuters reported that US employers added only 29,000 jobs in September, below economists’ expectations, creating a more complicated environment for policymakers weighing price stability against employment risks.

For global investors, the dollar’s latest advance therefore reflects more than a single economic indicator. It represents a broader reassessment of the US interest rate path at a time when inflation remains persistent, energy prices are rising and financial markets are confronting heightened geopolitical and fiscal uncertainty.
