An attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has killed 12 people and injured 309 others, according to the country’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).

The attack occurred, marking the third reported attack on the airport within a week as security tensions intensify across the region.

Saudi authorities confirmed on Sunday that the victims included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals and citizens from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

The aviation authority said the injured were receiving medical treatment at several hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition. The attack also caused damage to airport facilities, although the full extent of the destruction was still being assessed.

Airport Operations Suspended

Following the attack, authorities temporarily suspended operations at King Khalid International Airport while emergency teams assessed the damage and evaluated the safety of the facilities.

The disruption affected air travel, with airlines cancelling or adjusting flights to and from Riyadh. Passengers were advised to confirm their flight arrangements with their respective airlines before travelling to the airport.

The incident followed two earlier attacks on the same airport during the week, which reportedly resulted in additional casualties and heightened concerns about the security of Saudi Arabia’s aviation infrastructure.

Houthis Linked to Escalating Regional Conflict

Reports by international media have linked the latest attack to Yemen’s Houthi movement, which is backed by Iran. The group has been involved in a prolonged conflict with Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which has received support from Saudi Arabia.

The renewed attacks come amid escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis following the breakdown of a ceasefire arrangement and the resumption of military operations.

The growing confrontation has raised concerns about the security of civilian infrastructure, regional stability and the potential for a wider conflict involving additional international actors.

Saudi Arabia and its allies have condemned the attacks, while the Saudi-led coalition has indicated that it intends to respond. Any military retaliation could further intensify the conflict and increase the risks facing civilians across the region.

International Concerns Over Civilian Safety

The high casualty toll has renewed concerns about the protection of civilians and essential infrastructure during armed conflicts. Airports are critical transportation hubs that connect countries, support international commerce and facilitate the movement of humanitarian assistance.

The attack also highlights the wider consequences of escalating regional hostilities, particularly for international aviation, trade and economic confidence.

For countries across Africa, developments in the Middle East remain significant because prolonged instability can affect international transport routes, energy markets and the broader global economy.

As investigations and damage assessments continue, further attention will focus on the security situation in Riyadh, the response from Saudi Arabia and its allies, and the possibility of additional attacks.

Obaland magazine will continue to follow developments as more verified information becomes available.
