Enugu Police Arrest 30 Year Old Suspect Over Alleged Serial Rape, Robbery of Female PoS Operators.
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30 year old man, identified as Ugbor Chika Paul, over allegations of serial rape, armed robbery and sextortion involving female Point of Sale (PoS) operators and other young women in Enugu metropolis.
The arrest was announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe. Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly lured female PoS operators to secluded locations under the pretext of conducting high-value cash transactions before robbing and sexually assaulting them.
According to the police, the suspect also allegedly operated a fraudulent Facebook account under the name “Franklin Umeh” to lure another woman into a similar situation. A mobile phone reportedly recovered during his arrest contained nude photographs and explicit video recordings of identified and unidentified women, which investigators are expected to examine as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police Identify Three Reported Victims
The police statement detailed three reported incidents involving women aged 20, 30 and 21, respectively.
In the first incident, a 20-year-old female PoS operator at Akwata Market in Enugu was allegedly lured to a bush behind St. Peter’s Church in the Coal Camp area at approximately 11 a.m. on May 21, 2026.
Police alleged that the suspect robbed the woman of ₦600,000 and raped her at the location.
In a second reported incident on August 11, 2026, another PoS operator, aged 30 and working at the same market, was allegedly lured to the same location at approximately 5 p.m. The police said the suspect robbed her of ₦120,000 after allegedly attempting unsuccessfully to rape her.
The third reported incident occurred on October 4, 2026, when a 21 year old woman allegedly met the suspect after he contacted her through Facebook using the name “Franklin Umeh.”
According to investigators, the woman was initially lured to Old Park in Enugu before being taken to a secluded bush path around Udi Siding, where she was allegedly raped and sexually assaulted.
The suspect allegedly recorded nude images of the woman, stole ₦100,000 and her mobile phone, and subsequently threatened to circulate the recorded material unless she paid him ₦200,000.
Police further alleged that the suspect used the victim’s phone to contact some of her WhatsApp acquaintances, raising additional concerns about the possible misuse of private information and the threat of distributing intimate images without consent.
Investigation Continues as Police Seek More Victims
The Enugu State Police Command said investigations were ongoing and that the suspect would be charged in court upon their conclusion.
Ndukwe appealed to other potential victims to come forward and provide information that could assist investigators in establishing the full extent of the alleged offences.
The command also encouraged women who have experienced sexual violence, cyber stalking or sextortion to report such incidents to the police for appropriate action.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting residents from sexual violence, robbery and other criminal activities. He urged members of the public, particularly women and small-business operators, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
Implications for Women’s Safety and Digital Security
The allegations highlight the security risks that can arise when criminal suspects exploit routine business transactions and online interactions to gain access to potential victims.
Female PoS operators play an important role in Nigeria’s financial services ecosystem, providing cash withdrawals, transfers and other transactions in communities where access to traditional banking facilities may be limited. Protecting their safety is therefore essential to sustaining their livelihoods and ensuring the continued accessibility of these services.
The reported use of a fraudulent social media identity and threats involving intimate images also underscores the need for greater awareness of online deception, digital privacy and sextortion.
Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when meeting unfamiliar customers or online contacts, particularly where an arrangement involves travelling to an isolated location. Anyone facing threats involving intimate images should preserve relevant evidence, avoid complying with coercive demands where possible, and seek assistance from appropriate law enforcement authorities.
However, the allegations against the arrested man remain subject to investigation and judicial determination. The suspect’s arrest does not establish guilt, and the allegations must be tested through due legal process.
Obaland Magazine will continue to follow developments in the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.
