Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed Salamatu Suleiman as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alongside 10 other members nominated to serve on the board.
The Senate also confirmed Abdullahi Maikano as Executive Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), together with six members of the commission.
The confirmations formed part of the Senate’s proceedings at plenary, during which lawmakers considered appointments to key public institutions responsible for human rights protection and fiscal accountability.
The NHRC is mandated to promote and protect human rights in Nigeria, while the Fiscal Responsibility Commission oversees compliance with fiscal responsibility laws and promotes transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
At the same plenary, the Senate paid tribute to the late Pa Reuben Fasoranti, honouring his life and contributions to public life.
Lawmakers also called for the deployment of additional security personnel around the Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi axis to address recurring attacks and prevent further loss of lives.
The call underscores growing concerns over insecurity in affected communities and the need to strengthen security operations, protect residents and safeguard lives and property.
The Senate’s resolutions and confirmations highlight the legislature’s continuing role in public appointments, institutional oversight and responses to national security challenges.
The Senate confirms Salamatu Suleiman as NHRC Board Chair and Abdullahi Maikano as Fiscal Responsibility Commission chairman, honours Pa Reuben Fasoranti and calls for more troops around Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi.
