  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja on Thursday for Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform Umrah, the Islamic pilgrimage commonly known as the lesser Hajj.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the visit will provide Tinubu with an opportunity for spiritual reflection and prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and continued progress.

During his stay in the holy city of Makkah, the President is expected to observe the religious rites associated with Umrah and seek Allah’s guidance and blessings for Nigeria and its citizens.

Before departing the Federal Capital Territory, Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He is also expected to inaugurate equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force for its operations.

The statement said the President is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing the spiritual exercise.

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be undertaken at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which takes place during a specific period in the Islamic calendar.

The planned visit combines the President’s religious observance with official engagements in Abuja before his departure. Further details about his return itinerary were not provided in the statement.

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to travel to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, for Umrah after official engagements, including an airport inauguration in Abuja.

Labour Divided Over ₦70,000 Monthly Palliative as ₦500,000 Minimum Wage Demand Persists Reported by Musa Antiketu | Journalist at Obaland Magazine Nigeria’s organised labour movement is divided over the Federal Government’s proposed ₦70,000 monthly transport support for workers, with some labour representatives welcoming the intervention while others insist that an immediate salary increase is necessary to address the rising cost of living. The disagreement comes as organised labour maintains its demand for a ₦500,000 national minimum wage, arguing that the current statutory minimum of ₦70,000 has lost much of its purchasing power amid rising transportation, food, housing and other essential expenses. The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has rejected the proposed transport palliative as an inadequate substitute for a direct salary increase. The congress also called for the implementation of outstanding agreements with workers, particularly in the health sector, where unresolved salary-related issues have remained a source of tension. However, Gbenga Olowoyo, National Secretary of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), welcomed the government’s agreement to provide the monthly transport support while reiterating labour’s ₦500,000 minimum wage demand. Olowoyo said organised labour remained open to reasonable negotiations with the Federal Government but had not abandoned its proposed wage benchmark. NLC President Joe Ajaero has called for negotiations on a new minimum wage to begin promptly, arguing that early discussions would allow sufficient time to reach an agreement before the next review. The competing positions within the labour movement highlight the challenge of balancing immediate financial relief with demands for lasting improvements in workers’ earnings. While some representatives have welcomed the transport support, the TUC insists that temporary interventions cannot replace higher salaries and the fulfilment of outstanding agreements. Nigeria minimum wage, N500,000 minimum wage, N70,000 transport allowance, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress Nigeria’s labour movement is divided over the ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance as unions maintain demands for higher salaries and a ₦500,000 minimum wage.
