Peter Obi Arrives in Calabar for NDC Town Hall Meeting as 2027 Presidential Campaign Gathers Momentum.

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has arrived in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for a town hall meeting aimed at engaging residents, political stakeholders and other interest groups on issues affecting the state and the country.

Obi’s visit forms part of the NDC’s broader political engagement and mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The town hall meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the former Anambra State governor to interact directly with stakeholders, listen to their concerns and discuss key national issues, including economic development, insecurity, education, healthcare, poverty reduction and governance.

The NDC has increasingly adopted town hall meetings as a platform for direct engagement with Nigerians, allowing citizens to contribute to conversations about leadership, public policy and the country’s future.

Obi’s political engagements in other parts of the country have similarly focused on encouraging citizens to participate in shaping political priorities rather than leaving policy discussions exclusively to political office seekers.

In September, during an NDC town hall meeting in Kaduna, Obi advocated a demand driven approach to politics, arguing that citizens should determine the issues politicians address during election campaigns.

His arrival in Calabar comes amid increasing political activities across Nigeria as political parties and their candidates strengthen grassroots structures and build support ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, the political atmosphere surrounding Wednesday’s engagement has also highlighted the importance of peaceful political participation.

Reports indicate that security operatives intervened in Calabar to prevent a possible confrontation between supporters of the NDC and the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose supporters were conducting a separate rally in the area.

The Cross River State Police Command appealed to both groups to exercise restraint and conduct their political activities peacefully.

As political mobilisation intensifies, the Calabar meeting provides another opportunity for the NDC to strengthen its engagement with stakeholders in the South South region.

The extent to which these engagements translate into broader electoral support will ultimately depend on the party’s ability to sustain grassroots mobilisation, communicate credible policy proposals and address the concerns of Nigerian voters.
