BREAKING: Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From International Football, Ends Historic 23 Year Portugal Career.

Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23 year career representing Portugal’s national team.

The 41 year old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through an emotional video shared on his social media platforms, confirming that he would hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven jersey after the November international break.

Describing the decision as difficult, Ronaldo reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, family and millions of Portuguese supporters who stood behind him throughout his international career. He described representing Portugal as one of the greatest honours of his life, acknowledging the victories, disappointments and unforgettable moments that shaped his journey.

Ronaldo leaves international football as the men’s all time leading international goal scorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. His remarkable achievements include captaining the country to its first UEFA European Championship title in 2016 and winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He also became the first male footballer to score at six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.

His retirement follows a reported disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus during the previous international break, although Ronaldo’s announcement focused primarily on gratitude and his legacy rather than the circumstances surrounding his departure.

The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed profound appreciation for his contributions, describing him as an exceptional athlete, inspirational leader and enduring symbol of the national team. The federation has also indicated its intention to organize a special farewell tribute in recognition of his extraordinary service.

Although his international journey has ended, Ronaldo is expected to continue his professional football career with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, where he remains focused on his club ambitions and pursuit of 1,000 career goals.

His departure marks the end of a defining chapter in modern football, leaving behind records, trophies and a legacy that will continue to influence generations of players across Portugal, Africa and the wider football community.
