Ondo Air Crash: Nigerian Air Force Recovers Cockpit Voice Recorder as Investigation Intensifies.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the wreckage of its ATR 42 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, marking a significant development in efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the October 5 aviation tragedy.

The recovery was announced on Friday, November 6, 2026, by the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, in a statement issued in Abuja.

According to the Air Force, technical teams from the NAF and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that the recovered cockpit voice recorder was intact. The device is expected to provide investigators with important audio evidence, including cockpit communications and other recorded sounds from the aircraft’s final moments.

The Air Force also disclosed that part of the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly referred to as the black box, had been retrieved. However, efforts were still underway to locate and recover the remaining portion.

Additional aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains have also been recovered as the multi agency operation continues at the crash site.

Ejodame explained that recovery operations were ongoing despite the difficult swamp terrain, with teams working to retrieve outstanding aircraft components and facilitate the necessary technical examinations.

The recovery of the CVR represents an important step in the investigation, as cockpit recordings can help establish communications between crew members, identify warning signals and provide insight into events immediately preceding an accident.

The Flight Data Recorder, on the other hand, captures technical information about an aircraft’s operation, including speed, altitude, engine performance and other flight parameters. When analysed alongside cockpit recordings and physical evidence, the two devices can help investigators reconstruct the sequence of events leading to a crash.

The ATR 42  aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed into a swampy area in Igbokoda on October 5 while reportedly undertaking a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos.

The accident claimed the lives of all 25 people on board, comprising 20 passengers and five crew members, according to the official casualty figures.

Recovery efforts have been complicated by the swamp’s difficult terrain and underwater conditions, requiring the involvement of specialized personnel and equipment. The Nigerian Navy, Ondo State Government and other relevant agencies have supported operations at the site.

Following the accident, President Bola Tinubu directed the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, stressing the importance of identifying the circumstances that led to the tragedy and preventing similar occurrences.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau had earlier expressed readiness to provide technical assistance, including the recovery, downloading and analysis of flight recorder data, subject to the appropriate request from the military authorities.

Although the recovery of the cockpit voice recorder provides investigators with a potentially important source of evidence, it does not, by itself, establish the cause of the crash. The contents must undergo proper examination and be assessed alongside other technical findings.

As recovery operations continue, attention will now turn to the analysis of the recovered recorder and the retrieval of the remaining flight data recorder components. The findings are expected to contribute to a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding one of Nigeria’s recent military aviation tragedies.
