During the shortened trading sessions, the performance of Nigeria’s stock market was positive compared to the generally negative performance of other stock markets with top tier stocks at the local bourse appreciating in value.

The Lagos-based bourse had suffered its fourth consecutive weekly loss as its All-Share Index (ASI) and market capitalization depreciated by 0.45 percent to close at 46,631.46 and N25.139 trillion respectively in the previous week.

However, bargain hunting in Nigerian Breweries (+11.8 percent), Zenith Bank (+8.7 percent), GTCO (+6.5 percent), Okomu Oil (+5.6 percent), MTNN (+3.4 percent), and Dangote Cement (+2.4 percent) drove the main index up by 1.99 percent to close at 47,510.38 points while investors gained N500 billion as market capitalization closed at N25.639 trillion.

Consequently, the Month-to-Date (MTD) and Year-to-Date (YTD) return increased to +1.2 and 11.2 percent, respectively as the Federal Government declared Friday (April 15, 2022) and Monday (April 18, 2022) public holidays to commemorate the Easter celebrations.

Commenting on the performance of the market, analysts at Cordros Research, said, in the near term, they expected the bulls to retain dominance given the positioning for the Q1-22 earnings announcements, even as institutional investors continue to search for clues on the direction of yields in the FI market.

“However, we advise investors to take positions in only fundamentally justified stocks as the weak macro environment remains a significant headwind for corporate earnings”, they said.

On the other hand, equities markets across the globe settled lower as concerns about rising inflation, aggressive moves by Central banks, and escalating Russia-Ukraine crisis stoked worries about the global economic outlook.

Accordingly, US stocks (DJIA -0.5 percent; and S&P 500: -0.9 percent) were poised for a weekly loss as investors traded cautiously following hot inflation data and a mixed bag of corporate earnings. European (STOXX Europe: -0.9 percent and FTSE 100: -1.5 percent) equities were on track to end the week with losses as investors digested the latest policy announcement from the European Central Bank (ECB).

In Asia, the Japanese (Nikkei 225: +0.7 percent) market remains poised for a weekly gain boosted by tech shares trailing early gains on Wall Street. Also, the Chinese (SSE: -0.8 percent) equities adjusted themselves for a weekly loss as new COVID-19 cases in Shanghai dented hopes for a quick exit from the citywide lockdown.

Likewise, the Emerging market (MSCI EM: -0.8 percent) stock mirrored the bearish trend across global stocks consequent upon losses in China (-0.8 percent), while the Frontier market (MSCI FM: 0.0 percent) stock was unchanged.

Meanwhile, a total turnover of 1.247 billion shares worth N22.372 billion in 23,406 deals was traded last week by NGX investors, in contrast to a total of 1.137 billion shares valued at N10.812 billion that exchanged hands in the previous week in 23,471 deals.

The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 975.776 million shares valued at N10.678 billion traded in 13,097 deals; thus contributing 78.24 and 47.73 percent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Consumer Goods Industry followed with 65.187 million shares worth N1.752 billion in 2,725 deals while the Services Industry recorded a turnover of 42.614 million shares worth 135.745 million in 1,172 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, and Fidelity Bank Plc (measured by volume) accounted for 429.657 million shares worth N7.786 billion in 5,871 deals, contributing 34.45 and 34.80 percent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.
