  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

African Union Accredits Nigeria’s Counter Terrorism Centre as Regional Hub to Strengthen Security Across West Africa and the Sahel.

The African Union (AU) has accredited Nigeria’s National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) as a Regional Centre of Excellence for counter terrorism, marking a significant development in efforts to strengthen intelligence sharing, security coordination and counter terrorism capacity across West Africa and the Sahel.

The accreditation positions Nigeria’s counter terrorism institution to play a more prominent role in supporting regional governments and security agencies confronting terrorism, violent extremism and other transnational security threats.

The development comes amid persistent insecurity across parts of West Africa and the Sahel, where extremist groups continue to exploit porous borders, political instability, illicit financial networks and technological advancements to expand their activities.

Nigeria’s Growing Role in Regional Security

The designation builds on Nigeria’s longstanding efforts to establish a regional framework for coordinating counter terrorism operations and strengthening cooperation among African countries.

In April 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for a regional counter terrorism centre during the African High Level Meeting on Counter Terrorism in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing, operational coordination and capacity building in addressing the continent’s security challenges.

Nigeria’s National Counter Terrorism Centre, operating under the Office of the National Security Adviser, has since pursued a broader regional mandate focused on strengthening cooperation between national security institutions and their international partners.

According to information published by the centre, its responsibilities include coordinating Nigeria’s counter terrorism policies and strategies while supporting regional collaboration against terrorism and violent extremism.

The AU accreditation represents a further step towards formalizing Nigeria’s contribution to the continent’s collective security architecture.

Strengthening Intelligence Sharing and Regional Cooperation

The centre’s expanded role is expected to support closer collaboration among West African countries through professional training, technical assistance, intelligence exchange and the sharing of operational experience.

Such cooperation is particularly important as terrorist networks increasingly operate across national borders, making it difficult for individual countries to address security threats without coordinated regional responses.

Nigeria’s efforts have also included collaboration with the African Union Counter Terrorism Centre on training programmes designed to strengthen the capacity of security personnel to identify and disrupt emerging terrorist threats.

On October 13, 2026, the NCTC and the AU Counter Terrorism Centre commenced a three day regional training programme in Abuja focused on detecting and disrupting terrorists’ exploitation of information and communication technologies and emerging technologies.

The initiative brought together regional stakeholders to examine how security institutions could respond more effectively to technology enabled terrorism across West Africa and the Sahel.

The activities reflect a growing recognition that counter terrorism strategies must extend beyond conventional military operations to include intelligence coordination, technological capabilities, financial investigations and preventive measures.

Security Challenges Across the Sahel

The accreditation comes at a critical time for West Africa, particularly as insecurity in the Sahel continues to pose challenges for neighbouring countries.

Terrorist organisations operating across parts of the region have exploited governance gaps, local grievances, economic hardship and weak border controls to sustain their activities and extend their reach.

The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has also complicated regional cooperation, increasing the importance of maintaining practical channels for security dialogue and intelligence exchange across political divides.

Nigeria has consistently advocated stronger regional collaboration, recognizing that instability in the Sahel can have serious implications for its own security and that of neighbouring countries.

A regional centre with enhanced coordination and training responsibilities could help participating countries strengthen their institutional capabilities and improve their responses to cross border threats.

However, the effectiveness of the arrangement will depend on sustained cooperation among governments, adequate funding, reliable intelligence sharing mechanisms and the ability to translate institutional commitments into measurable security improvements.

Beyond Accreditation: The Need for Measurable Results

While the AU accreditation represents an important institutional milestone for Nigeria, its long term significance will depend on how effectively the centre fulfils its expanded responsibilities.

Regional security cooperation requires more than formal recognition. It demands practical arrangements for sharing intelligence, developing specialized expertise, coordinating responses to emerging threats and maintaining trust among participating countries.

Equally important is the need to ensure that counter-terrorism operations respect human rights, protect civilians and address the underlying conditions that allow violent extremism to take root.

A comprehensive approach that combines security operations with effective governance, economic opportunities, community engagement and efforts to prevent radicalization remains essential to achieving lasting stability.

For Nigeria, the accreditation offers an opportunity to strengthen its leadership role in regional security while supporting a more coordinated African response to terrorism.

For West Africa and the Sahel, the ultimate measure of success will be whether the expanded cooperation helps prevent attacks, disrupt terrorist networks, improve institutional capabilities and make communities safer.

As African countries continue to confront evolving security threats, the centre’s regional mandate could become an important platform for advancing collective action, provided the necessary resources, partnerships and accountability mechanisms are in place.
