On Monday morning, an unfortunate incident occurred in Aba, Abia State, resulting in the loss of lives. Armed men attacked a police patrol team, leading to the death of a police inspector and three civilians. The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident and provided details of the attack.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, the incident took place at approximately 11:28 am on July 21, 2024. The police operatives from the Rapid Response Squad Aba were on patrol along Ngwa Road when they were ambushed by armed men traveling in an ash-colored Sienna vehicle. The assailants opened fire on the police personnel, but the officers bravely fought back, preventing a potentially more devastating outcome.
During the exchange of gunfire, two of the armed men were neutralized, while the others managed to escape with varying degrees of bullet injuries. Tragically, Inspector Shehu Oyibo, Chika Godliveth, Onyenaturuchi Jonah, and Eniobong Godsgift Clement lost their lives as a result of the attack. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the mortuary, and an investigation is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing criminals.
In response to this incident, the Abia State Police Command has deployed additional officers to strategic locations across the state to ensure the safety of residents and their properties. The command also urges the public to remain calm and carry on with their lawful activities, assuring them that security measures are in place.
The police command advises residents to report any suspicious movements or individuals with bullet injuries to the nearest police station. By doing so, they can contribute to the ongoing efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and maintain peace in the state.
