With presidential and kontri assembly campaigns officially underway, nigeria na entering a political season wey fit define di country’s direction for di next four years. But as candidates hit di road, civil society groups, lawyers and observers are warning say di 2027 race risks being consumed by hate tok, ethnic profiling and violence instead for policy debate

Campaigns for di presidential and kontri assembly elections begin on top august 19, 2026, and go run until january 15, 2027, one day before Di polls on top january 16. Governorship and state haus for assembly campaigns go begin on top september 9 and end on top february 5, ahead for voting on top february 6.

Last week, several presidential candidates signed di kontri peace accord facilitated by di kontri peace committee and di kukah centre. Di accord commits signatories to peaceful and issue-based campaigns.dos who signed include peter obi for di kontri democratic congress, ndc, prince adewole adebayo for di sdp, and omoyele sowore for di aac.

Presido bola tinubu, di apc candidate, na represented by secretary go di goment for di federation, george akume. Adc candidate atiku abubakar na absent, wit no explanation give.

Tinubu, atiku and obi are widely seen as di frontrunners for di presidency. All three de also central figures for di contentious 2023 election, and early signs suggest 2027 fit follow a resemble pattern.

Legal battles are already for play. Atiku don filed a case questioning tinubu’s qualifications, alleging discrepancies for nysc records submitted to inec. Obi na pursuing a separate case for di u. S. seeking di release for documents related go drug-related forfeiture involving tinubu years tey

Stakeholders tok di anxiety dey 2027 na rooted for recent history. Di 2011, 2015 and 2023 elections de all marked by rhetoric dat took on top ethnic, religious and regional tones.

Human rights lawyer idris faro dem dey call for strict adherence go di law. “election na no bi a do-or-die affair. Campaigns must be issue-based. Security agents must be kakaraka and fair while discharging dia duties. Di risks are no bi juss theoretical. Lawyer toluwa odekhe pointed to early warning signs, de include online threats referencing ethnic violence for lagos, and recent nhrc interventions naming laik for dangerous statements.

Inec chairman, prof. Joash amupitan, don listed hate tok, disinformation, localized violence, vote-buying and foreign interference as major threats to 2027.

Section 97 for di electoral act prohibits campaigning based on top religion or ethnicity to promote or oppose a candidate. Di cybercrimes act also criminalizes racist and xenophobic conduct online.

Executive director lanre arogundade say di peace accord na gud begin, but enforcement matters. “we must be prepared to call komot dos who violate di letters and spirit for di peace agreement and campaign dat violators be sanctioned,” im say.

Analyst patrick onoja listed four fears drawn from past elections: hate tok as per campaign tool, voting by tribe and religion instead for policy, a return for thuggery, and di spread for aba made bin dey and deepfakes.

ln 2023, aba made inec result sheets went viral hours before collation ended,” onoja say. “with ai, we suppose expect aba made audio and deepfakes 48 hours go di election. ”

Im urged regulators to sanction offenders from day one, and voters to demand manifestos and town halls.

For di heart for di debate na shikena kweshion: go 2027 be wey concern nigeria’s problems, or wey concern nigeria’s divisions?

Di wahala are clear. Food prices, jobs, security, education and healthcare dominate everyday conversations. But as campaigns intensify, e get pressure to drag di conversation back to identity

for now, di peace accord na signed. Di campaigns don begin. Di courts are involved. And as onoja noted, “if we gree hate tok, profiling, violence and mudslinging to define di campaigns, then regardless for who wins, nigeria loses. ”

Di next five months go test weda politicians, parties, di media and voters fit keep di focus on top solutions — or weda 2027 becomes anoda cycle for bitterness
