CAN to Nigerian Leaders at Eid-el-Kabir: Citizens Need Tangible Hope, Not Empty Promises

The Christian Association of Nigeria has called on Nigerian leaders at all levels to embrace the true spirit of sacrifice, honesty, and compassion as Muslims across the country celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, warning that citizens are increasingly in need of visible hope rather than political promises.

In its Eid-el-Kabir message, the Christian body urged government officials and public office holders to demonstrate leadership that reflects empathy and accountability amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic and security challenges. The association stressed that millions of Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs, insecurity, unemployment, and deepening hardship, making it necessary for leaders to provide practical solutions that can positively impact ordinary citizens.

The organization noted that Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, symbolizes obedience, faith, and selflessness   values it said should inspire those in authority to prioritize the welfare of the people above personal or political interests. According to CAN, Nigerians are no longer satisfied with repeated assurances and speeches but are looking for measurable improvements in governance, economic stability, and national security.

The group further encouraged Nigerians to use the festive period to promote peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and national unity despite the country’s socio-political differences. It emphasized the importance of interfaith harmony, particularly in a diverse nation like Nigeria where both Christians and Muslims continue to play critical roles in national development.

The Eid-el-Kabir celebrations come at a time when many Nigerians are expressing concerns over inflation, fuel prices, food insecurity, and the broader economic realities affecting households across the country. Religious and civic organizations have increasingly used major national celebrations to call attention to governance issues and the need for reforms capable of restoring public confidence.

CAN also appealed to political leaders to make deliberate efforts toward easing citizens’ burdens through transparent policies, improved security measures, and people-centered governance. The association maintained that genuine sacrifice from leaders would inspire confidence and renew hope among Nigerians facing difficult economic conditions.

The statement adds to growing national conversations surrounding leadership accountability, economic recovery, and social welfare as Nigeria navigates a complex period marked by economic reforms and security concerns.
