In the aftermath of the tragic passing of Sylvester Oromoni, a student at Dowen College, Lagos, the Coroner, Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, conducted a thorough inquiry to ascertain the cause of death. After a comprehensive six-hour session, the coroner’s verdict exonerated the school and its students, ruling that Sylvester’s demise was due to natural causes. However, Magistrate Kadiri emphasized that the unfortunate event could have been prevented, highlighting the negligence of both the parents and the medical team as contributing factors.

The coroner’s findings included absolving certain students of Dowen College from any involvement in Sylvester’s death, emphasizing their innocence in the matter. Furthermore, he issued recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Among these recommendations were advisories urging parents to prioritize their children’s health and advocating for improved collaboration between law enforcement and medical professionals to ensure proper handling of cases involving minors.

Additionally, Magistrate Kadiri called for enhanced security measures within Dowen College, including better monitoring of student movements and the implementation of comprehensive psychological evaluations for students suspected of engaging in bullying behavior. These measures are intended to create a safer environment within the school premises and foster a culture of accountability and responsibility among students and faculty members alike.

As the community mourns Sylvester’s untimely passing, it is imperative for all stakeholders to heed the coroner’s recommendations and work together to prevent similar tragedies in the future. By prioritizing the well-being and safety of students, schools can uphold their duty of care and ensure that every child receives the protection and support they deserve.
