Edo Enforces Zero Tolerance for Substandard Projects, Threatens Reconstruction at Contractors’ Expense

The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning to contractors handling infrastructure projects across the state, directing strict compliance with approved quality standards or face mandatory reconstruction at their own expense.

The Special Adviser on Projects Implementation and Monitoring, Engr. Williams-Bello Phoebe, delivered the directive during an on-site inspection of two major road projects in Edo South Senatorial District.

Speaking to journalists, Phoebe stressed that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo maintains a zero-tolerance stance on substandard work, noting that only projects that meet approved specifications will be accepted.

She disclosed that the government has commenced a comprehensive monitoring exercise across the three senatorial districts — Edo North, Edo Central and Edo South — aimed at ensuring uniform standards and full contractual compliance on all ongoing and completed projects.

“We want all contractors to understand that Governor Okpebholo places high premium on quality control. We have begun curing processes on roads that have reached pavement level, including binder and wearing courses. There is no tolerance for substandard work,” she said.

Phoebe explained that the exercise is not only to enforce construction standards but also to ensure prudent use of public funds and guarantee long-term value for residents.

She warned that any contractor found delivering substandard work will be required to reconstruct the project at no cost to the state government.

The Special Adviser also urged contractors yet to reach pavement stage to adhere strictly to specifications before inspection teams arrive.

“We advise contractors whose projects are still at early stages to do the right thing. We do not want a situation where corrective actions such as scarification and reconstruction will be enforced,” she added.

Phoebe reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to accountability, durability and professionalism, stressing that all infrastructure projects must meet contractual benchmarks and stand the test of time.

The ongoing monitoring exercise forms part of broader efforts by the Okpebholo administration to improve infrastructure delivery and enhance the quality of life for residents across Edo State.
