EDO MUSIC: THE TRUE INTERPRETATION OF MUSICAL MEANING, SAYS ESTHER EDOKPAYI, THE LADY OF SONGS

Nigerians at home and abroad have been urged to immerse themselves in Edo music for a genuine understanding of musical depth and significance, according to Esther Edokpayi, popularly known as the Lady of Songs. This appeal was made in Benin, the capital city of Edo State, during an interactive session with journalists and a correspondent from Obaland, where she reflected on the success of the well-attended Live on Stage event held in the United Kingdom.

Esther emphasized the pivotal role of Edo (Benin) music in reorienting the musical inclinations of Nigerians and Africans, steering them back to their cultural roots. She highlighted the transformative power of Edo music, contrasting it with the dominance of foreign sounds that characterized the early new millennium.

Describing Edo music as a natural gift with soul-stirring compositions that resonate with individuals’ consciences, Esther remarked that it has the ability to evoke positive changes in listeners, no matter their circumstances. She expressed, “Edo music is inherently captivating and has a way of touching the heart. It’s simply irresistible.”

Furthermore, she stressed that Edo music serves as a catalyst for entertainment and economic empowerment, particularly for the youth in the state. Esther, who seamlessly blends music and acting in her career, shared her recent experience of hosting the Lady of Songs Live musical concert in the United Kingdom, which she believes has revolutionized the perception of indigenous music composition.

Looking ahead, Esther revealed her plans for future collaborations with industry heavyweights such as Simi, 2Baba, and Tiwa Savage, expressing her eagerness to explore new creative territories. She expressed her admiration for 2Baba’s artistry and envisioned a groundbreaking collaboration that would leave a lasting impact on the music scene.

In offering advice to budding artists in the industry, Esther emphasized the importance of showing respect to senior colleagues as a key factor in achieving longevity and success. She also extended her gratitude to her loyal fans for their unwavering support.

Esther Edokpayi, who ventured into secular music with her debut in 2009, has amassed an impressive discography of over 20 tracks and has graced stages with live performances across Europe and Africa, solidifying her reputation as a versatile and accomplished artist.
