The Edo State Police Command has announced the recovery of ₦300,000 extorted from a local furniture maker by some officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command, Benin City, following a viral social media video that drew widespread public outrage.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 14, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, anipr, the Command confirmed that the officers involved in the act have been identified, detained, and will face disciplinary action in line with the Nigeria Police Force regulations.
The Command further disclosed that the extorted sum has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while stern administrative measures have also been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to reinforce professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens’ rights.
The statement added that under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, the Command encourages residents to report cases of unprofessional conduct through its Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) or the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) via the following numbers: 08150999335, 08100389992.
The Edo Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, accountability, and transparent policing, while appreciating the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, AIG Salman Dogo, Psc, for his continued support in ensuring credible policing standards within the zone.
