“EFCC Arrests Man Over Alleged Naira Abuse at Birthday Party in Enugu”

Nigeria’s anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested a man identified as Iziga Jude Ikechukwu for allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency during a birthday celebration in Enugu, in the country’s southeast.
According to the EFCC, Ikechukwu was taken into custody after a video circulating on social media appeared to show him spraying and mishandling Naira notes at a lavish birthday party. The agency said the act constitutes a violation of Nigeria’s currency laws, which prohibit the abuse, mutilation, or defacing of the Naira. Authorities say the suspect will face charges once investigations are concluded.
The commission emphasized that the misuse of the national currency including spraying, stepping on, or otherwise damaging banknotes during social events is an offense punishable under Nigeria’s legal framework. Under the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, individuals found guilty of Naira abuse risk fines, imprisonment, or both. The EFCC has in recent months intensified enforcement against offenders as part of broader efforts to protect the integrity of the country’s currency.
Officials say the arrest also forms part of an ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at discouraging cultural practices that undermine the dignity and durability of the Naira. While spraying money at weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations remains common in parts of Nigeria, authorities have repeatedly warned that such practices could attract legal consequences.
The EFCC has urged Nigerians to treat the national currency with respect and adhere to existing regulations governing its use. The agency also called on event organizers and the general public to avoid practices that may lead to currency abuse.
Recent enforcement actions by the commission have drawn nationwide attention, with legal experts and social commentators debating the balance between cultural traditions and compliance with financial regulations.
