The Edo State Special Security Squad, codenamed Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, has announced plans to expand its operations to other parts of the state, particularly Edo Central and Edo North, as part of a renewed effort to combat insecurity.

This was revealed by Comrade Amiolemen Noah Idemudia, an executive member of the squad, during a press briefing in Benin City. He disclosed that since the inception of the security outfit, there has been a notable drop in incidents of cult-related killings and kidnapping in Benin City and its surrounding areas.

“I believe Edo people must have been seeing that there are changes in this whole situation. There has been a bit of silence regarding killings as it used to be in the past,” he said.

Comrade Idemudia credited the success of the squad to the unwavering support of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who established the unit, as well as the cooperation of Edo residents.

“We also thank Edo citizens. Sincerely, without their assistance too, we will not be able to get to where we are at the moment. They have really helped, which shows that every citizen of Edo State was tired of the situation,” he added.

He clarified that the squad is a non-political initiative focused solely on security and warned criminals that Edo is no longer a safe haven for their operations. He also encouraged cult members seeking an exit from violence to come forward and renounce their membership peacefully, assuring them they would not be harassed or embarrassed.

Idemudia emphasized that the squad does not have the authority to conduct financial activities or independent investigations. Their mandate is strictly to assist the police in tackling crime, with suspects handed over to law enforcement for further investigation after apprehension.

He cited a recent case involving allegations of financial misconduct, clarifying that the accused individuals were not part of the squad. The claims were later retracted and an apology issued.
