In a strong demonstration of its commitment to combating domestic violence and supporting survivors, the Edo State Government presented a cheque of 5 million naira to Uyi Tina, a domestic violence survivor. The ceremony was held at the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, at Government House in Benin City.

Lady Uyi became visibly emotional upon receiving the cheque and expressed her heartfelt gratitude. “Thank you so much. God bless you, and God bless Governor Okpebholo,” she said.

The event was attended by key government officials, including Mrs. Joy Irenose Ihensekhien, Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues.

In her consolatory remarks, Mrs. Anani encouraged Lady Uyi by invoking the resilience exemplified in the Biblical story of Job, who, despite profound loss, ultimately recovered. “Once there is life, there is hope. We are grateful that life was not taken from you.

I know that the law will take its course. You are a daughter of our State, and what affects you affects us. We want you to know that we are here for you. While we may not have everything to offer, we will provide the support we have.

The Governor sends his best regards and wishes you a speedy recovery. He urges you not to give up,” she stated.

Lady Uyi Tina’s ordeal began upon her return from Europe on December 31, 2024, when her estranged husband, Osaro Awughan, set her apartment ablaze. The incident not only resulted in the loss of her accumulated possessions but also left her hospitalized.

This initiative underscores the Edo State Government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and its determination to provide comprehensive support to victims of domestic violence.
