Edo state Charpter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ) has congratulated the state female team known as Edo Queens for emerging champions at the third edition of the Besty Obaseki Women Football Tournament , BOWFT, played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The Edo Queen Football Club defeated their Bayelsa’s counterpart known as Bayelsa Queens Football Club by four goals to three from the resultant panelty shootout, after one all draw at regulation time during the final of the competition.
The third edition of the Football tournament according to the initiator and first lady of Edo State, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, focused on addressing Gender-Based Violence in the country through women’s football.
She noted that every year, the Football tournament seeks to fight against social vices ravaging the society, especially the women’s folk.
The elated Chairperson of women journalists in Edo state, Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan, commended the Edo State first lady for her laudable initiative and quest in reducing Gender Based Violence through empowering of the women and girl child through sports to the barest minimum in the State.
While appreciating the Edo first lady for her doggedness in fighting the women’s cause, she urged the women folk to recipocates the first lady intiative with moral support.
Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan assured the first lady of the state women journalists unflinching supports, in the area of adequate coverage of all her programmes in the state.
Earlier, the ceremonial kick at the final was performed by the First Lady of Edo State, Her Excellency, Mrs Betsy Obaseki who expressed her profound gratitude for the support received through out the tournament, geared towards fighting a social vice in the society, with the third edition themed “Stop Gender Based Violence”.
The 2023 edition of the Betsy Obaseki women football tournament has the highest number of First Ladies who watched the final game at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
