Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.
The governor gave the assurance on Friday when he received members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, during a courtesy visit at Government House, Benin City.
Addressing the delegation, Okpebholo said his administration remains focused on ensuring prompt payment of pensions and improving the living conditions of retirees, stressing that those who served the state deserve dignity and timely entitlements.
In response to issues raised by the unions, the governor announced the constitution of a committee to review their demands.
The committee will be chaired by the Head of Service, Anthony Okumgbowa, and includes the Commissioner for Finance, Emmanuel Okoebor, the Accountant-General, and the Permanent Secretary, Pension Bureau.
Okpebholo also pledged to provide a bus for the union to ease mobility, describing the gesture as part of broader efforts to support senior citizens in the state.
During the meeting, the governor sought feedback from the pensioners on their welfare, particularly on pension payments, reiterating his resolve to ensure Edo remains up to date in meeting its obligations.
“Tell me sincerely, is Edo State still owing you pensions? As far as this administration is concerned, we are committed to prompt payment. Our goal is to ensure that no retiree is subjected to hardship after years of service,” he said.
Earlier, the State Chairman of the NUP, Sir Samuel Okhuelegbe, commended the governor for measures taken so far, especially the regular payment of pensions.
He, however, highlighted challenges facing pensioners, including unpaid gratuities for both state and local government retirees, as well as outstanding arrears.
The union also appreciated the government’s interventions, including the payment of monthly pensions, introduction of a 13th-month bonus, and the enrolment of pensioners into the state’s free health insurance scheme.
Okpebholo reaffirmed that his administration will continue to implement policies that promote the welfare of both active workers and retirees, noting that their wellbeing is critical to sustainable development in the state.
