The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Benin Zonal Directorate, has confirmed the arrest of Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, over allegations of naira abuse. The arrest took place on Monday, March 17, 2025.
Mr. Okungbowa, who previously served as the Coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) before his recent suspension by the Edo State Government, was reportedly taken into custody following the circulation of a viral video. In the video, recorded on March 9, 2025, he was allegedly seen spraying and mutilating the naira at a public venue.
The EFCC has stated that investigations into the matter are ongoing, and Mr. Okungbowa will be formally charged in court upon their conclusion. The agency reiterated its commitment to upholding financial regulations and ensuring compliance with laws governing the handling of Nigeria’s currency.
Authorities continue to urge the public to respect financial regulations regarding the naira, emphasizing that acts of defacement or abuse remain punishable under Nigerian law.
