“Ekiti 2026 Governorship Race: Police Issue Firm Warning Against Campaign Vandalism, Electoral Offences”

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, the Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning to political actors, cautioning against the destruction of campaign materials and other unlawful acts capable of undermining the democratic process.

The Ekiti State Command emphasized that all parties and their supporters must adhere strictly to electoral laws, stressing that acts such as tearing down opponents’ posters, defacing billboards, and engaging in political violence will not be tolerated. Authorities noted that such actions not only violate the law but also threaten the peaceful atmosphere required for credible elections.

In a statement released to the public, the police assured residents and stakeholders of their preparedness to maintain law and order throughout the election period. The command reiterated its commitment to deploying adequate personnel and resources to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process. It also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.

The warning comes amid heightened political mobilization across Ekiti, with parties ramping up campaigns and visibility efforts. Observers say early interventions by security agencies are critical in preventing a repeat of past incidents where electoral tensions escalated into violence or voter suppression.

Across Nigeria, election-related offences including vandalism of campaign materials are prosecutable under existing electoral laws enforced by bodies such as the Independent National Electoral Commission. Analysts argue that consistent enforcement remains key to strengthening public trust in the system and ensuring a level playing field for all candidates.

Political stakeholders have been advised to prioritize issue based campaigns and respect democratic norms, as the credibility of the Ekiti 2026 election will largely depend on peaceful conduct and institutional accountability.
