“FAAN Clarifies Akure Airport Security Incident, Debunks Hijack Rumour”
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed circulating reports suggesting a hijack attempt at Akure Airport, Ondo State. In an official statement released on Saturday, FAAN confirmed that the incident was a security operation that successfully led to the arrest of four suspected bandits in the vicinity of the airport.
FAAN emphasized that there was no threat to passengers, airport staff, or aircraft. The authority described the misinformation as “unfounded and misleading,” urging the public to rely on verified information from official sources.
According to FAAN, the suspects were intercepted by security personnel during a routine patrol near the airport perimeter. The operation, conducted in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, aimed to enhance airport security and ensure uninterrupted airport operations. No flight was delayed or affected by the operation.
The aviation regulator also warned against the spread of fake news on social media, highlighting the potential risks of public panic and reputational damage to the nation’s aviation sector. FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for air travel across Nigeria.
This clarification comes amid growing concerns over airport security nationwide. Industry experts stress that proactive policing and collaboration between airport authorities and law enforcement are crucial in preventing criminal activities around aviation hubs.
