The family of Olatunji Abdul, a Nigerian businessman currently imprisoned in South Africa, has made a heartfelt appeal to the Nigerian government and the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for urgent intervention to save his life. At a press conference held on Friday in Ikeja, the family expressed their deep concerns for Olatunji’s safety, alleging that he has been wrongfully imprisoned since 2025 due to false charges believed to be orchestrated by state agents and xenophobic rivals.
According to the family, Olatunji Abdul, who has been a prominent figure in South Africa’s hospitality and tourism industries, has faced judicial corruption and state-sanctioned persecution. His family claims that this ordeal has devastated their lives, culminating in the death of their mother due to the stress and trauma of the situation. Olatunji, originally from Osun State, relocated to South Africa in 2009 and founded the Hydro Club, a leading hospitality consultancy in Johannesburg, where he created numerous job opportunities for Nigerians and supported various community initiatives.
His family believes that Olatunji’s success made him a target for jealous competitors and corrupt officials, leading to a malicious campaign against him dubbed “#DestroyAbdul.” This campaign allegedly resulted in his wrongful arrest and subsequent conviction. In 2020, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison on theft charges, a decision that his supporters claim was based on fabricated evidence.Family Urges Nigerian Government to Intervene in Brother’s South African Imprisonment
Despite being granted leave to appeal his sentence in November 2024, Olatunji faces significant obstacles in securing legal representation. Reports indicate that several lawyers have withdrawn from his case due to threats and intimidation, forcing him to represent himself in court. His brother, Sesan, expressed that the situation continues to deteriorate, with fears of poisoning in prison and the confiscation of Olatunji’s laptop, which he needed for preparing his legal defense.
The family, alongside the international criminal justice organization Zarephath Aid, has implored the Nigerian government to act swiftly to prevent any further harm to Olatunji. Their petition highlights his contributions to the Nigerian diaspora and emphasizes that he is not a criminal but a victim of a calculated plot against him. They fear that if action is not taken, they could lose a man who has brought pride to Nigeria.
Ben Abraham, representing Zarephath Aid, stated, “This issue transcends Abdul’s personal plight; it is about safeguarding Nigerians abroad who are subjected to unjust persecution despite their valuable contributions.” He emphasized that Olatunji represents the potential of Nigerians globally and deserves the protection of his homeland.
The family has reiterated the urgency of the situation, declaring, “Olatunji is not just a businessman; he is a father, a son, and a role model for many Nigerians in the diaspora. Nigeria must take immediate action to ensure his safe return.
