  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

FG, Lagos Launch Joint Power Committees to Drive 24 Hour Electricity Supply Across Lagos.

The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have established joint committees to coordinate measures aimed at delivering stable and reliable 24 hour electricity supply across Lagos, positioning the state as the first pilot under the government’s proposed 24/7 Energy Zones programme.

The agreement followed a Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Lagos House, Marina. The meeting brought together Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu and senior officials and stakeholders in the electricity sector.

Tegbe said Lagos was prioritized because the Lagos electricity corridor accounts for an estimated 40 to 50 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity demand. He explained that improving supply in the corridor would have significant implications for households, businesses and industries, particularly in one of the country’s most commercially active centres.

Under the initiative, the Federal Government and Lagos State will focus on four priority areas: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation. The Ministry of Power has also engaged electricity distribution companies and secured commitments aimed at increasing power offtake and improving reliability for consumers along the Lagos corridor.

A Joint Technical Committee is expected to identify outstanding challenges, coordinate interventions and recommend practical steps for implementing the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot. The committee will include representatives from key institutions such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Lagos Independent System Operator (LAISO), Lagos State Electricity Authority (LSEA) and the Federal Ministry of Power.

The technical committee will report to a Steering Committee chaired by Governor Sanwo Olu and co chaired by Minister Tegbe, providing a higher level structure for monitoring implementation and resolving institutional challenges that could hinder progress.

The Lagos pilot is expected to serve as a model for extending the approach to other major economic corridors, including the Abuja Kaduna Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors. The broader objective is to improve the reliability of electricity supplied to major commercial and industrial centres while strengthening the electricity market and supporting economic activity.

Governor Sanwo Olu welcomed the federal intervention and described discussions at the retreat as productive, stressing the need for practical solutions that can translate into measurable improvements for electricity consumers. The governor also expressed Lagos State’s commitment to developing a more competitive and sustainable electricity market.

While the establishment of the committees marks a significant administrative step, the success of the 24 hour supply target will ultimately depend on implementation across the electricity value chain, including generation, transmission, distribution infrastructure, market financing and regulatory coordination. The government has indicated that some interventions are expected to produce immediate “quick wins”, while others will require longer-term investment and system upgrades.

The initiative therefore represents an attempt to move Nigeria’s power-sector reforms beyond policy commitments toward a more coordinated, corridor based approach, beginning with Lagos and potentially expanding to other parts of the country.
