FG writes govs as agency predicts flooding in 31 states

The Federal Government has sent letters to 31 governors, warning them about the potential flooding in their states from April to November this year. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, shared this information during a briefing on the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency disclosed that 148 local government areas in 31 states, including Lagos, Kano, and Delta, have been identified as high flood-risk areas. In response to the impending flood, state governments are taking measures such as demolishing buildings on river channels, relocating residents, and clearing drainages to prevent flooding. The 2024 Annual Flood Outlook indicates that some areas in 31 states are categorized as high flood-risk locations, while others in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will experience moderate flooding. The minister also highlighted that flash and urban floods will be experienced in urban city centers across the country. The Federal Government has urged state governors to take the necessary precautions and swiftly respond to any flooding incidents to avoid chaos. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency emphasized the importance of flood forecasting and early warning as effective strategies to minimize the negative impacts of floods on lives and property. Nigeria has been experiencing flood disasters with varying degrees of severity, with 2012 being one of the most devastating years on record. The government has established a committee to enhance flood mitigation, adaptation, preparedness, and response capabilities. State governments, including Sokoto, Benue, Plateau, Rivers, Lagos, Edo, and Osun, are already taking proactive measures to address the potential flooding.

They are creating awareness, demolishing structures on flood-prone areas, and identifying higher grounds for relocation. The public is advised to stay alert and cooperate with the government’s efforts to prevent flooding incidents.
