Minimum Wage: How Obaseki deceived Edo workers, as NLC appeals for full implementation

The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC in Edo state has appealed for the full implementation of the N70, 000 National Minimum Wage, saying the immediate-past Governor of the state, Mr Godwin Obaseki never implemented it despite his boasts to the contrary.

It was gathered that former chairman of the NLC in the state, Odion Olaye did not challenge the ex-Governor on the wage implementation and was consequently removed from office and replaced with Comrade Bernard Joman as acting chairman.

The decision to remove Olaye was reached at a State Executive Committee meeting of the NLC held at the Labour House in Benin City, where 27 affiliate unions of the NLC out of the 34 active unions, affirmed his removal.

The acting Chairman of NLC in the State Comrade Bernard Joman appreciated the Governor Monday Okpebholo administration on the approval of the 13th month salary for Edo State workers this December.

Joman appeal to the governor to fully implement the N70,000 Minimum wage as opposed to what obtained in the recent past.

He said the governor’s approach to issues less than one month in office, has demonstrated that Edo State is truly rising again.

The labour leader told workers that the governor approved the 13th month salary to serve as motivation.

“Godwin Obaseki never implemented the minimum wage. He told us and as leaders of NLC we know that even if he approved it then, he will not be there in office again to implement it. So, we the organized labour are appealing to our Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo to fully implement the N70,000 minimum wage for us.”
