Gov Okpebholo Restores Order, Dignity to Oba Market in Benin

Traders at Oba Market in Benin City are witnessing a remarkable transformation under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, following years of neglect, insecurity, and infrastructural decay. The governor’s direct intervention has led to cleaner surroundings, restored drainage systems, improved security, and a renewed sense of hope for thousands of market traders.

‎The Edo State Government, under Okpebholo’s leadership, has undertaken visible steps to revamp one of the city’s oldest and busiest markets. These steps include the dredging of blocked drains, re-paving of walkways, improved sanitation efforts, and dismantling of extortionist groups that once terrorized traders.

‎

‎Many traders have shared their testimonies, confirming the shift from abandonment to purposeful governance. Blessing Eboigbe, a veteran foodstuff seller, recalled how regular flooding previously destroyed her goods. “Now I can sleep well when rain falls,” she said, praising the cleared drainage system.

‎

‎Security has also improved. Joseph Iroghama, a fabrics dealer, said traders now operate without fear. “He didn’t talk he acted. Before, we were extorted by fake union agents. Today, we feel safe,” he said, noting a rise in daily sales due to the stabilized environment.

‎

‎The government has also restored portions of the market destroyed by fire under previous administrations, while modern fire-prevention systems are being installed in the reconstructed areas.

‎

‎Grace Aigbeka, a traditional accessories vendor, compared Okpebholo’s performance to his predecessor. “Obaseki made speeches. Okpebholo makes moves,” she said, pointing to newly repainted stalls and the return of a functioning marketplace.

‎

‎The state has also introduced a direct complaint desk for resolving grievances, making governance more accessible. Felix Ubokhedion, another trader, commended the administration’s plan to provide interest-free loans. “We feel included now. Somebody in government is thinking of us,” he said.

‎

‎Most significantly, Governor Okpebholo is being praised for his physical presence at the market often visiting without prior notice or media attention. “He walks among us. He listens,” said Grace.

‎

‎Oba Market, once plagued by disrepair and fear, is now cleaner, safer, and more organized. Traders say the difference lies not just in policies, but in leadership that engages and delivers.

‎

‎While some acknowledge the previous administration’s plans, many note that Governor Okpebholo’s strength lies in execution and presence not in promises, but in results.

‎

‎For many, this isn’t just a market restoration it’s a rebirth. And in a nation fatigued by unfulfilled political vows, Okpebholo’s impact is drawing admiration for being felt not in headlines, but in the everyday hustle of the people.
