Gunmen launched a fatal assault on Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, resulting in the deaths of two police officers. This attack comes just two weeks after a similar incident in Oba, Idemili South Local Government, where hoodlums bombed a police station.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers used improvised explosives and firearms, setting part of the station on fire. The two officers were killed while attempting to fend off the attackers.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. He stated that the bodies of the fallen officers had been recovered and taken to a mortuary. Additionally, five unexploded improvised devices were found at the scene.
Following the attack, a joint security force was deployed to track down the perpetrators. The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the site to assess the damage and review security measures. He urged the public to come forward with any information, assuring them of confidentiality.
This marks the second major attack on a police facility in Anambra within two weeks, fueling concerns over increasing violence and insecurity in the region.
Princess Chinwe Nnabuife, a House of Representatives member, condemned the attack as “senseless” and extended her condolences to the families of the deceased officers. She assured the public that her office was working with federal security agencies to address the region’s security challenges.
Nnabuife called on the community to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging cooperation with security forces to restore peace and stability.
