In a tragic incident on Tudsday morning, gunmen attacked a stop and search checkpoint along the Owerri-Onitsha road in Imo state, resulting in the death of four police officers and a Point of Sale (PoS) operator. The attackers reportedly stormed a popular hotel where the checkpoint was mounted at Irete around 6:30 pm.
According to an eyewitness, fear gripped the residents, making it difficult to determine the number of civilians who were also shot during the attack. The gunmen not only targeted the police officers but also killed a female PoS operator and several pedestrians who were caught off guard. All the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, their injuries were fatal.
This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in the area. The road has become a soft spot for these criminals, as they have previously targeted and killed both policemen and civilians. The residents are now living in fear, and there are concerns that the Monday sit-at-home order, which had previously been discontinued, may be reinstated due to this incident.
The indigenes of Imo state are calling on the government to take immediate action to beef up security in the area and prevent further occurrences. They believe that a stronger security presence will deter these gunmen and make the community safer.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Imo State Police Spokesman, Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful as he had not responded to the text message sent to him at the time of writing this report.
It is crucial that the authorities address this issue promptly and ensure the safety of the residents. The loss of lives in such senseless acts of violence is truly heartbreaking, and it is the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens and bring the perpetrators to justice.
